Here is a great example showing that walls need to have a base. In this case stone is built up from the ground and cob is sculpted above the stone. The base of a wall is often the weight distributor. And like a good pair of boots, it keeps your primary wall system nice & dry (from melting snow or rain splash). If you inspect an old building (that has lasted a century or more), you undoubtedly find a good base keeping the wall system protected.
