Y FB How plantation affects the prevailing winds

illustrates how different types of plantation around a house can affect the prevailing winds. Let's break down each scenario:

No Plantation:

* Wind Flow: The wind flows freely around the house, with no significant obstruction.
* Implications: This can lead to strong, direct winds hitting the house, potentially causing discomfort and energy inefficiency.

Front Plantation:

* Wind Flow: A plantation is placed in front of the house. The wind is partially blocked by the trees, and the flow is redirected upwards.
* Implications: This can reduce the direct impact of wind on the house, making it more comfortable. However, the upwards deflection might create turbulence and potentially increase wind pressure on the roof.

Back Plantation:

* Wind Flow: A plantation is placed behind the house. The wind is blocked from the back, and the flow is redirected towards the front of the house.
* Implications: This can create a wind tunnel effect, increasing wind speed and pressure on the front of the house. This might lead to discomfort and potential damage.

Back & Front Plantation:

* Wind Flow: Plantations are placed both in front and behind the house. The wind is blocked from both sides, creating a calmer environment around the house.
* Implications: This is generally considered the most favorable scenario, as it reduces wind speed and turbulence around the house, leading to a more comfortable and energy-efficient living space.

Key Takeaways:

* The placement of plantations can significantly impact the wind flow around a house.
* Strategic planting can create a more comfortable and energy-efficient living environment.
* Understanding the prevailing wind direction is crucial for effective plantation planning.

Y ,FB A carousel-style composting toilet and a solar toilet.

Two types of composting toilets: a carousel-style composting toilet and a solar toilet.

Carousel-Style Composting Toilet

A carousel-style composting toilet typically has multiple composting chambers arranged in a circular fashion. As one chamber fills up, the entire unit is rotated, allowing the full chamber to be replaced with an empty one. This system facilitates the composting process and ensures continuous use.

Solar Toilet

A solar toilet uses solar energy to heat the composting chamber, accelerating the decomposition process. This type of toilet often has a transparent lid that allows sunlight to enter the chamber, providing the necessary heat for composting.

Key Differences:

Composting Method: The carousel-style toilet relies on manual rotation for composting, while the solar toilet uses solar energy to heat the chamber and speed up the process.
Energy Source: The carousel-style toilet doesn't require an external energy source, while the solar toilet relies on solar energy.
Design: The carousel-style toilet has a more complex design with multiple chambers, while the solar toilet typically has a simpler design with a single chamber.
Both types of composting toilets offer environmentally friendly and sustainable alternatives to traditional flush toilets, especially in areas with limited water access or where sewer systems are not available. They are designed to minimize waste and maximize resource efficiency.

?Y FB Passive solar heating principles to harness the sun's energy to warm a structure during cold periods... where sunlight is available

the natural heating system illustrated in the image.

Overall Concept:

This design utilizes passive solar heating principles to harness the sun's energy to warm a structure during cold periods. It's particularly well-suited for cold regions where sunlight is available.

Key Elements and Functioning:

1. Sun Exposure:
   - The large window allows direct sunlight to penetrate into the structure.

2. Heat Storage:
   - A mass of stones or a Trombe wall (a wall made of concrete or masonry) is placed behind the window. This material absorbs and stores the heat from the sun's rays.

3. Air Circulation:
   - An opening at the bottom of the window allows cool air to enter the space.
   - A channel or vent is created near the top of the wall or stone mass. This allows the warm air, heated by the stored heat, to rise and circulate throughout the structure.

4. Insulation:
   - The structure is well-insulated to minimize heat loss. This helps maintain the warmth generated by the system.

How it Works:

1. Daytime:
   - Sunlight enters through the window and strikes the stone mass or Trombe wall.
   - The mass absorbs and stores the heat.
   - Cool air enters through the bottom opening and is warmed as it passes over the heated mass.
   - The warm air rises through the channel and circulates throughout the space.

2. Nighttime:
   - The stored heat in the mass continues to warm the air, providing a source of warmth even when there is no direct sunlight.

Benefits:

- Reduced Heating Costs: By utilizing solar energy, it can significantly reduce reliance on traditional heating sources, leading to lower energy bills.
- Environmental Friendliness: It's a sustainable and eco-friendly heating solution as it doesn't involve burning fossil fuels.
- Comfort: It provides a consistent and comfortable indoor temperature.

Considerations:

- Sunlight Availability: The system relies on ample sunlight, so it's most effective in regions with abundant sunshine.
- Mass Size and Material: The size and

There’s a reason why homes were built with a back glassed in room that faced south with the back painted dark and the interior painted dark as well.  Leaving windows with screens cracked upstairs let the heat rise. We had transom windows to allow the heat to move around.  Also, the front and side porches were shaded and there were front trees to allow cool air to enter screened windows and the cooling current was directed through the top dormers as the heat rose.   It’s called Air Conditioning in plantation times

Y FB Earth tube ventilation

 https://www.facebook.com/share/p/14QFeCwCWM/

illustrates a concept known as Earth Tube Cooling or Earth Tube Ventilation. It's a passive cooling system that uses the earth's constant temperature to regulate indoor air temperature.

Here's how it works:

1. Air Intake: A vent or pipe is placed underground, typically at a depth where the earth's temperature remains relatively stable year-round, usually about 8-10 feet deep.
2. Air Flow: As the air outside the building heats up, it rises, creating a pressure difference. This causes cool air from the underground tube to be drawn into the building.
3. Air Distribution: The cool air enters the building through vents or diffusers, providing natural cooling.
4. Warm Air Exhaust: The warm air inside the building rises and is naturally vented out, often through a high point in the building or a mechanical exhaust system.

Advantages of Earth Tube Cooling:

* Energy Efficiency: It reduces reliance on air conditioning, lowering energy consumption and costs.
* Environmental Friendliness: It's a sustainable and eco-friendly solution with minimal environmental impact.
* Improved Air Quality: By bringing in fresh, cool air from underground, it can improve indoor air quality.
* Reduced Noise Pollution: It eliminates the noise associated with traditional air conditioning units.

Considerations:

* Climate: This system works best in regions with significant temperature fluctuations between day and night.
* Site Conditions: The depth and length of the underground tube need to be carefully considered based on local soil conditions and temperature profiles.
* Building Design: Proper ventilation and insulation are crucial for optimal performance.

In conclusion, Earth Tube Cooling offers a simple and effective way to harness the earth's natural cooling power to reduce energy consumption and create a more sustainable living environment.

FB European winter box beds (16.-20. century)

A two-compartment closet bed

In the cold winters of northern Europe, houses were difficult to heat, Then some forgotten craftsman gave him a bed to build, almost like a closet, where to hide from the cold of the night, when the last chills of the family fire went out, Real woodworking were these beds of one or two compartments, which from 16  for centuries protected non-claustrophobic Europeans frm night ice.
The box bed, which originated in the late medieval period, appeared in different forms throughout Europe: there are examples from Britain, Scotland, Austria, the Netherlands and Scandinavia. In some places they were used until the 20th century, which makes sense when you consider the cold European winters and houses  where the warmth came only from a wood fire.  And even before electricity, people simply didn't heat their homes that much, so being cold outside also meant being cold inside.

FB A passive solar design building strategy

illustrates a passive solar design strategy for a building. This technique takes advantage of the sun's position in the sky to heat and cool a building naturally, reducing the need for mechanical heating and cooling systems.
**Key Elements and How They Work:**
1. **Roof Design:**
* The roof has a distinctive shape with a steeper pitch on one side and a shallower pitch on the other.
* In winter, when the sun is lower in the sky, the steeper roof allows sunlight to penetrate deeper into the building, warming the interior.
* In summer, when the sun is higher in the sky, the shallower roof prevents excessive heat gain by shading the building.
2. **Window Placement:**
* Large windows are positioned on the southern side of the building to maximize solar gain during winter.
* Smaller windows or shading devices can be used on the eastern and western sides to reduce heat gain in the summer.
3. **Thermal Mass:**
* Materials with high thermal mass, such as concrete or brick, can be used to absorb and store heat during the day and release it slowly at night, helping to regulate the indoor temperature.
**Benefits of Passive Solar Design:**
* **Energy Efficiency:** Reduces reliance on mechanical heating and cooling systems, saving energy and reducing energy costs.
* **Environmental Friendliness:** Decreases greenhouse gas emissions associated with energy consumption.
* **Improved Indoor Comfort:** Provides a comfortable indoor environment throughout the year.
* **Increased Property Value:** Buildings with passive solar design features often have higher property values.
**Additional Considerations:**
* **Climate:** The specific design of a passive solar building will depend on the climate. In colder climates, the focus may be on maximizing solar gain, while in warmer climates, the focus may be on minimizing heat gain.
* **Building Orientation:** The orientation of the building in relation to the sun's path is crucial. In the Northern Hemisphere, buildings are typically oriente

FB "Twelve years ago, I built this straw bale house for my family..."

Twelve years ago, I built this straw bale house for my family—though I should really say we built it, as my wife, Dovilė Rozmanaitė - Bružienė, was both the interior and exterior designer, bringing her best to the project. We’ve been happily living here ever since. While some parts are starting to show wear, we expect it will be another ten to fifteen years before any major repairs are needed. The clay-plastered, textured walls and the excellent air quality inside have become features we can’t imagine living without. In fact, our next house will also be built with straw!
People sometimes raise concerns about mice in straw bale houses. It’s true that some homeowners deal with this issue, as do owners of other types of homes. I can’t say for certain whether straw houses attract more rodents than others, but I believe it largely depends on the quality of construction—whether straw bale/panel or conventional structures. Over the twelve years we’ve lived here, we’ve caught four mice inside and occasionally heard a few nesting in the roof. Four mice over twelve years isn’t a big catch, I should say, especially considering our forested, meadow-rich surroundings, where rodents are common.
From a technical standpoint, good exterior airtightness is key. It prevents warm air and food scents from escaping, which can attract mice. As long as the exterior is well-sealed, I’d argue that uninvited guests are unlikely to bother your home.
This was the first straw bale structure I built. Since then, my team and I have built many more, and I recently published a book on building high-quality straw bale and straw panel homes, sharing the best practices I’ve learned over the years. If you’re considering building a straw home, I encourage you to take a look. If your architect or structural engineer isn’t familiar with this method, the book offers a variety of technical solutions, complete with detailed drawings. Using these insights can help you build a truly high-quality straw home.
